Can quantum theory and Einstein’s general theory of relativity be united in a single quantum theory of gravity? Several years ago, two of our generation’s most brilliant physicists—Stephen Hawking and Roger Penrose—conducted a series of six debates on this topic at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences at the University of Cambridge. Now, in The Nature of Space and Time, New Edition, they have adapted these lectures into a book and provided fresh perspectives.
Penrose, like Einstein, refuses to believe that quantum mechanics is a final theory. Hawking thinks otherwise, and argues that only quantum gravity, coupled with the no-boundary thesis that eliminates the need for a singularity at the Big Bang, can hope to explain the cosmos completely. In a new afterword, the authors outline how further developments have caused their positions to further diverge on a number of key issues, including the spatial geometry of the universe, inflationary versus cyclic models of the cosmos, and the black hole information-loss paradox.
The Nature of Space and Time, New Edition, gives two deep thinkers a chance to debate one of the most profound issues in modern science.
