To expand the boundaries of our knowledge, physicists are undertaking experiments worldwide. In The Edge of Physics, Anil Ananthaswamy takes us from desolate deserts to derelict mines to see how they work and ponder the questions they hope to answer.
We begin 2,341 feet underground within the Soudan Mine in Minnesota, where the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search is trying to detect the mysterious particles that bind galaxies and clusters. Then we’re off to Lake Baikal in Siberia, the world’s deepest freshwater lake, to witness an experiment designed to capture another class of ghostly particle: neutrinos. Later, the author visits Chile’s Atacama Desert to see the four mammoth mirrors of the Very Large Telescope as they collect faint light from previously unseen supernovae. He also visits Mauna Kea in Hawaii to encounter the Keck telescopes, which have been harnessed with a 12-foot-tall spectrograph capable of analyzing the light (and hence velocity) of thousands of galaxies. Other wonders await us in South Africa, Antarctica and elsewhere.
Reporting from some of the world’s most inhospitable research sites, The Edge of Physics is a guide to frontier science at our planet’s frontiers.
