The world around us is packed with solid evidence for the truth of evolution by natural selection. Why Evolution is True spotlights research from genetics, paleontology, geology, molecular biology and anatomy that demonstrates the undeniable validity of Darwinism. One wonders, for example, what Tiktaalik roseae would say to creationists who claim there are no “intermediate forms” between species in the fossil record. As Jerry Coyne explains, this 375-million-year-old creature is a direct link between earlier lobe-skinned fish and later amphibians—it possessed the gills, scales and fins of the former but the flat head and high nostrils of the latter. Turning from the land to the air, we find remarkable specimens such as the well-known Archaeopteryx, whose skeleton exhibits traits—including feathers, an opposable big toe and teeth—that place it midway between modern birds like the chicken and the small theropod dinosaur Compsognathus. Coyne also highlights “atavisms”—sporadically expressed remnants of ancestral features that appear in modern animals. We know from the fossil record, for example, that modern whales are descended from land mammals that returned to the sea; and today, about 1 in 500 whales is born with a rear leg, complete with femur, tibia and fibula that protrude outside the body. A phenomenon hard to explain in the absence of evolution! With insights on everything from hominid evolution to penicillin resistance, Why Evolution is True is vital reading for anyone thrilled by the story of life on Earth as well as anyone who claims there is “no evidence” for evolution. I have been a student of natural history for a long time and until now I had not come across such a complete argument by anyone. He does a very in-depth argument for evolution that it would reenforce anyone's belief in science.

'Why Evolution is True' is an excellent book! Prof. Coyne explains complex issues in easy-to-understand terms. He also makes it fun and interesting, which is the ultimate goal when writing a general-reader type book. I like how Coyne will explain a specific topic, and then show how it can only be explained with evolutionary theory. Even if you know and accept evolutionary theory, this is a great book, and well-worth reading! I will definitely be recommending 'Why Evolution is True' to friends and family who want to discover the beauty of evolution, and science in general.
