Frozen Planet

Isolated by frozen seas and extreme weather, the poles support animals found nowhere else. Featuring spectacular color photographs, Frozen Planet takes us on an unforgettable journey to document the behavior of these creatures as well as the stark physical beauty of their natural habitats.

The world’s best wildlife photographers were aided by custom-designed, high-definition cameras that allowed undisturbed observation of animal behavior and landscapes never seen before. The book focuses on many species, including the Arctic fox, Adélie penguin and wandering albatross. We also witness the ingenious teamwork adopted by killer whales hunting other whales and seals in the Antarctic; the courtship and hunting strategies of polar bears and wolves; and much more.

Consider a polar bear hunting ringed seals on pack ice in Canada. In a series of striking images, we witness a bear patrolling to sniff out seal pups in their dens under the ice. Once a ringed seal den has been located, the bear rears up and pounds down on the ice, trying to break through to the pup below before it can escape into the sea. When the ice is soft, a bear is successful roughly once in every three attempts.

We also join a trail of male Emperor penguins as they travel from the ice edge to their colony on Snow Hill Island in the Weddell Sea, many miles away and sheltered by ice cliffs. The colony site needs to be on firm ice that won’t break up before spring; once the eggs are laid, the females go back to sea and months will pass before they relieve the males of their duty incubating the eggs.

With an eloquent text by Alastair Fothergill and Vanessa Berlowitz, Frozen Planet presents some of the most breathtaking images ever taken of the polar regions.
