Anatomy is the study of the body’s structures; physiology is the chemistry and physics of these structures and how they work. If you’re looking for a user-friendly primer to this fascinating field, Anatomy & Physiology for Dummies, Second Edition, is for you. Maggie Norris and Donna Rae Siegfried packed the book with clear definitions and crisp explanations of every body part and function from head to toe.
In the opening section, “Settling in to Study Anatomy,” we find overviews of everything from metabolism and locomotion to the body’s ability to heal wounds. Then, in “Anatomy from Head to Toe,” we scrutinize the skeletal system; muscles; and skin, hair and nails. How are joints put together, and how do they move as they do? What causes osteoporosis, cleft palate, and arthritis? What happens inside a muscle when we flex it, and why do muscles sometimes spasm? We find answers to these questions and others.
The third section encompasses the nervous, endocrine, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and immune systems. How do our brains and bodies work together to regulate our senses? The authors explain the role of the thyroid, pituitary, and other glands, and show how the red cells in our blood transport oxygen. We also track our tracheas into our lungs, and study problems such as asthma, bronchitis, and pneumonia. Later on, we see the role of the gallbladder and kidneys. The book’s final section focuses on creating new bodies, with a look at the reproductive system as well as birth and development. This includes a trimester-by-trimester look at the developing fetus, and what happens as we age.
What’s going on inside you? Anatomy & Physiology for Dummies, Second Edition, offers the most accessible answers you can find.
