Altogether the 11 manned Apollo missions yielded 18,667 photographs. For Apollo, each of the missions' astronauts has chosen a favorite image from his space journey and contributed thoughtful commentary. Their visual selections are accompanied by other iconic images—80 in all—ranging from a photograph of a live television transmission made during Apollo 7 to an eclipse photo taken during Apollo 12. There’s much more, to Apollo; acclaimed author and astrophysicist Stephen Hawking and his daughter Lucy Hawking contribute a foreword that describes these photographs as inspiration for the future of human space travel. Additionally, an introduction from NASA explores the role of the astronaut as photographer, and there are narrative accounts of each Apollo mission’s achievements.
Apollo fuses photography and text into a beautiful account of this grand quest to the moon and back.
