Each day of the Moon’s 28-day cycle holds surprises for the careful observer. In Moonwalk with Your Eyes, Tammy Plotner leads us on an unforgettable day-by-day tour of lunar vistas, while regaling us with historical tidbits and offering advice on using binoculars or small telescopes to enhance the view.
As early as lunar day 2, we can discern features like Mare Crisium, a sea the size of the state of Washington, and the bright, peninsula-like feature called Agarum Promontorium. By day 5, binoculars will have no problem recognizing the shallow ring of crater Posidonius, which is almost flat from eons of lava flows and could be as much as three billion years old. Also on day 5, Plotner is careful to note that when we turn our sights to the small crater called Plinius, we are looking at the region that holds the remains of Ranger 6, which crashed there on February 2, 1964.
As the Moon approaches full, the lack of shadows makes it more difficult to study, but revelations still abound. On day 12, Grimaldi, a huge old basin on the Moon’s western limb, is ripe for viewing; Plotner shows how to discern its inner walls, which have been heavily eroded. From there we can “crater hop” to the craters Rocca and Cruger. Even on day 26—by which time the Moon is nearly new again—we can make out the low hills and depressions in the center of crater Pythagoras. Throughout, Plotner points out how changing shadows alter a site’s appearance. In addition to day-by-day commentary, Plotner provides a chart of lunar phases through the year 2025, a list of lunar eclipses through 2040, a landmark map indicating the position of 50 must-see lunar features, and more.
Want to explore Earth’s lone natural satellite? Moonwalk with Your Eyes makes it easy.
