Cycles of Time

“One of the deepest mysteries of our universe,” writes Roger Penrose in Cycles of Time, “is the puzzle of whence it came.” It will not surprise fans of this brilliant thinker that Penrose has developed a new framework to resolve that puzzle, dubbed “conformal cyclic cosmology.”

Leading up to an explanation of his model, Penrose analyzes a range of concepts, from the role of entropy to the light cone geometry of spacetime. His new cosmic model hinges on the claim that photons (and other massless particles) can propagate smoothly from an earlier pre-Big Bang phase into the current post-Big Bang phase and vice versa. Penrose suggests that what we perceive as the Big Bang is really the remote future of a previous eon of the cosmos, and that in turn, the remote future of our own universe will serve as the Big Bang for a future eon—and this cycle is repeated ad infinitum. An exotic scenario to be sure, but one that Penrose shows to follow from the mathematics of conformal manifolds, which may describe cosmic geometry. Best of all, this idea can be tested by studying concentric rings that may be discerned in the cosmic microwave background radiation.

Cycles of Time proffers bold and original ideas about the nature of the cosmos.
